Vermont Fly Fishing Report – Late May Conditions on the Winooski, New Haven & Middlebury Rivers

After a stretch of steady rain last week across Vermont, rivers like the Winooski River, New Haven River, and Middlebury River saw flows bump up and water color increase for several days. While conditions were high early on, the added water has ultimately been a positive heading into the recent warm weather, helping keep rivers healthy and temperatures in great shape for late May trout fishing.

This week’s sudden heat and summer-like temperatures have quickly accelerated insect activity across central Vermont. Warmer afternoons have produced improved hatch activity on many rivers, with anglers seeing increased caddis, Blue Wing Olive activity, and stronger evening windows. Trout have been feeding actively during lower-light periods and in softer holding water as daytime temperatures climbed into the 80s earlier this week.

The Winooski River around Waterbury has continued to fish well during float trips, especially during morning and evening periods before peak afternoon heat. Streamers have produced several larger trout recently, while nymph rigs continue to move fish consistently through riffles, seams, and deeper buckets. As flows settle back into shape after last week’s rain, conditions are lining up well heading into the Memorial Day Weekend stretch.

The New Haven River has also benefited from the recent water. Flows remain healthy, and the river is fishing especially well for anglers willing to cover water and target pocket water, plunge pools, and shaded structure. Early mornings and overcast periods have been particularly productive as trout remain aggressive following the recent bump in flow.

Further south, the Middlebury River has continued to clear nicely and is shaping up for excellent late spring conditions. Nymphing deeper runs remains productive throughout the day, while streamer fishing has been an effective way to target larger fish following the recent rain events.

Looking ahead, cooler temperatures forecasted later this week and into Memorial Day Weekend should help improve daytime fishing conditions even further. Lower air temperatures combined with stable flows could create some of the best overall fishing conditions of the spring season across Vermont.

At Francisco Fly Fishing, guided float trips and walk-and-wade trips are in full swing across central Vermont. With Memorial Day Weekend and prime late spring fishing conditions approaching, remaining dates are beginning to fill quickly for anglers looking to experience some of the best fly fishing Vermont has to offer.
